The University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona, is surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges and the Sonoran Desert. The Arizona campus is also lined with palm trees and cacti set against a stunning backdrop of Tucson sunsets. With such gorgeous sights to be seen it's no wonder that University of Arizona students love to hang out at the mall. No not the shopping mall. The mall at the University of Arizona is a huge grassy area in the middle of campus where over 30,000 Wildcats sometimes gather between classes. Architecturally the University of Arizona campus is distinguished from the city of Tucson's abundant adobe buildings. The University of Arizona's first building called Old Main is entering its second century but other campus buildings look more like high tech science facilities. The fact is that science is the University of Arizona's forte with out question. The clear desert skies combined with the most up to date equipment have attracted some of the nation's leading astronomers to the University of Arizona to teach so astronomy students have everything they need to be on the cutting edge. Other standouts departments include history, English, and social science. Aspiring photographers can leaf through the personal collection of Ansel Adams. The Center for Creative Photography on the University of Arizona's campus offers one of the leading photographic collections in the world. University of Arizona administrators say that tougher admissions standards have not curbed the increase in freshman applications especially from out of state applicants. Nearly 30% of the University of Arizona student body is from outside the state of Arizona. As for living accommodations, dorm rooms at the University of Arizona tend to be small but well maintained. The biggest challenge for freshmen may be getting a room as opposed to residing comparably in the room. Space is limited and Students are encouraged to submit their housing applications as early as possible. Less than 20% of undergraduates live in the dorms. The majority of upperclassmen take advantage of the availability of inexpensive off campus housing. Despite the high percentage of students living off campus, the University of Arizona is quite lively on most weekends as the students come back for the many parties, sporting events, and cultural events on campus. Technically the University of Arizona is an alcohol-free campus but it's questionable as to whether most of the fraternities have realized that yet. The Spring Fling which is described as the largest student run carnival in America is one of the University of Arizona's most time honored traditions. Athletics also have a great tradition on the University of Arizona campus. The men's basketball team has won national championships and is consistently ranked among the best in the nation and the same is true of the men's baseball team. |
