Colleges And Universities In New York
The New York College Scene
|
New York University or NYU as its more commonly known, lies in the heart of Greenwich Village. New York University is a well-known and widely respected academic institution that prides itself on a diverse student body, a quality faculty, and a rigorous academic curriculum. The students at the university appreciate all it has to offer but they also aren't shy about taking advantage of all New York City has to offer. Students say New York University is the perfect place for students who want the combination of a high quality education combined with the fast-pace and excitement of one of the world's greatest cities. New York University is smack dab in the middle of Washington Square and surrounded by trendy clubs, shops, and restaurants. It's also near SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown. The modern architecture of New York University mixes with the older brick quads around Washington Square Park where it's not uncommon to find all sorts of interesting people including hookers and drug dealers. But New York University is not defined solely by New York City's bright lights. The school also has a much higher academic reputation than most colleges and universities. Of particular note is the highly regarded Tisch School of Arts where such famous directors as Spike Lee, Martin Scorcese, and Oliver Stone learned their craft. The reputation continues as New York University undergraduates continue to win the majority of the national student filmmaker awards hand out annually. As a matter of fact, NYU film crews are almost as common as the off-the-wall shops in Greenwich Village. Lest you think New York University is all about the arts, consider the stiff competition at NYU's highly ranked Stern School of Business. The accounting department in particular is a student favorite. The corporate recruiters who scoop up graduates as quickly as they can also seem to be impressed with New York University's Stern School of Business. As with most colleges and universities, the academic competitiveness varies with the particular degree program. The consensus of student opinion seems to be that the classes are challenging but not overly demanding. With over 3 million volumes, New York University has one of the largest libraries in the country and you'll often find the library packed with students burning the midnight oil to study for an exam or complete a project due the next day. Perhaps reflective of the city in which it's located, the student body of New York University is more diverse than you'll find as most colleges and universities. Barely half of each New York University freshman class is from New York State and most of them are from New York City and the surrounding suburbs. Compare that with most state colleges and universities where upwards of 80% of the student population is from in state. |
