No matter how you slice it, the University of Florida in Gainesville is gigantic. The campus is huge set on over 2,000 acres of rolling terrain in north central Florida that is also heavily forested. The athletic teams are a modern day dynasty having won the last two NCAA men's basketball championships as well as the most recent NCAA football championship. But don't think it's all about sports, the University of Florida also boasts top academic programs.

Applications and enrollment are rising and the students have mixed emotions about it. Some love the diversity of students the university can admit due to the large selection of applicants while others think it's just getting too big. UF as the University of Florid is known is most recognized for its engineering and pharmacy programs. Business administration is the most popular course of study followed by finance and psychology. Other popular majors include elementary education and advertising. Students cite foreign languages and math as weaker areas in additional to fine arts and music.

If you can't find a suitable degree program at the University of Florida, you're probably not going to find one anywhere as only two other universities in America offer more degrees than the University of Florida. Those two are the University of Minnesota and the Ohio State University. Coincidentally Florida defeated Ohio State to win the most recent football and basketball national championships so at least Ohio State University has the upper hand on the University of Florida at something.

The technology craze is striking many colleges and universities around the nation and the University of Florida is not different as it recently instituted a policy requiring all students to own a personal computer. And the university's computer network will ramp up to handle over 40,000 computers.

A super sized university is not without its impersonal environment and mountain of bureaucracy and you'll find all that at the University of Florida. Just ask the students. Some of the classes are so large that videos of the lectures are made to ensure all students have the opportunity to see them. Now that's big.

But don't despair because most students say the quality of teaching is outstanding and most professors have an open door policy which students find very helpful. Academic challenges vary by student and degree program as you would expect.

The student body at the University of Florida consists predominantly of in state students. Over 90% of the student body is originally from Florida and nearly all of them graduated in the top 20% of their high school class. Still the student body claims to be diverse and says that diversity is emphasized throughout the University of Florida. The may be mostly from Florida but the students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse opinions
