The majority of traditional brick and mortar colleges & universities are now offering online university degrees or at least are planning to roll out online university degree programs in the near future. Online university degree programs offer many advantages including virtually unlimited degree options, flexible schedules, and the opportunity to pursue an online university degree from almost anywhere in the world. Students can earn undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate degrees while sitting in front of a computer.

While the classroom environment can never be completely emulated online, technological advances such as webcams and streaming audio and video provide amazing learning experiences at affordable prices since schools don't need to incur any additional expenses to build more virtual classrooms other than possibly a small investment in setting up the technological infrastructure.

Once the infrastructure is setup, the cost to maintain it is minimal and much less than the cost of maintaining a physical infrastructure. Online students use such tools as discussion forums, chat rooms, and cyber libraries in addition to traditional email to communicate with instructors and fellow classmates. Some online university degree programs use video whether it's taped or live via a webcam. Students get more of a real classroom feeling when they can actually watch a professor lecture.

It's not practical to offer some degrees online. For example, would want to use a doctor or lawyer who received all their training online? Unless you're a little crazy you wouldn't. These fields require physical interaction with qualified instructors. But certainly under the right circumstances an online university degree can be the perfect solution. And in the end society as a whole benefits from a more highly educated population.
